Our logo features the Scimitar-horned Oryx, an antelope emblematic of the environmental crisis facing Saharan wildlife. Once abundant across the Sahel, the oryx is now extinct in the
wild. The photo below is the last known picture of oryx in the wild; it was taken in the Aïr Mountains of Niger in 1980.

Hope for the recovery of this and other desert species is reflected in efforts today to restore the oryx as a vibrant symbol of the Sahara’s natural heritage. SCF and its partners in North Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the United States are pooling their efforts to ensure that the best available stock is bred in captivity for release back into the wild.
